  1. Back in 1970, a study in Los Angeles of heart attack cases showed that people who got help within an hour had the best chance of survival. It was this study that supported Los Angeles getting a paramedic program. We think about paramedics as a normal part of emergency services, now, but it was a real innovation to have medicine in the field back in the '70's. Los Angeles and Louisville, KY both got EMS and paramedics at the same time. As a Louisvillian, I'm pretty proud of that. Here they are called First Responders.
