Unless you're pure energy, living on universe juice, people gotta work and produce to feed you, clothe you, provide you with energy, keep the distribution infrastructure for all these things going, etc. Those people also are not likely made of pure energy living on universe juice, so they appreciate being able to afford for themselves clothing, energy, housing, etc. This isn't a dollar thing--it's an "our nature" thing. If you don't work, you die. That is simply our nature as human beings. While our civilization provides us a small buffer to that, it can't work miracles.

Jack Farris "hugely inflated military budget," It's a sizable chunk, but that's not really where our money goes. I think it's something like 33% of total federal spending. Where a lion's share of federal spending goes is Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security. These account for over $2 trillion a year. No federal spending even comes close to social safety net spending. "CARES act that provided huge bailouts to corporations while people are now waiting in line at food banks." About half of that money went to help sustain individuals and their livelihoods. Only about a quarter of it went to help sustain corporations and large businesses. "Now that people are literally starving, you got this big argument against helping keep them alive and healthy? You're in need of therapy. Get help!" You're in need of a sensibility, critical thinking skills and rationalism.

Jack Farris It's not that everyone can see through it, but that they can't see but two feet in front of their face. That's why they're progressives and not centrists. I don't mind there existing progressives--they have their place in ensuring that we're always looking forward not resting on our laurels, but the group tends to feel confident while not understanding the scope of what they're unaware of.

You really need to spend more time learning right now and less time commenting and talking. You can't grasp the nuance of what you're talking about, and that's a huge problem, because you're trying to be the loudest voice in the room while choosing to remain ignorant.

Jack Farris As I said before, just because something's nice to do, it doesn't make it sustainable or feasible. If you can't even concede to that, you are wholly unreasonable. The concept that if it's nice to do, you must do it is how people end up in squalor with 500 cats. That's the mental disorder.

Myles Savant You're completely ignorant of what socialism is. When did Jesus ever teach that the public or workers should own the means of production? How do socially funded services equate to a socialist economy? He didn't, and they don't. Just because something is nice to do, doesn't mean it's feasible or sustainable.

Are you self-aware enough to understand how whiny this segment is due to being so incredibly economically unrealistic? People die. It's the only thing we're born guaranteed to do. To force people to stop producing but still expecting resources to be there is not a solution to this problem.

@calisto9856 No, wtf are you talking about? Where's the aid if we're not producing? Money isn't edible; it doesn't provide shelter, power, clothing. It buys those things, but it isn't those things itself. Those things come from work. If you're not producing, then there's nothing/less to buy. You can't just shut everything down and hand out money, expecting everything to be just fine. Humans cannot stop consuming and producing. That's not a capitalism or market thing--that's a human nature thing. We need to transform things from raw materials to consumables as a mode of survival by our very nature. Giving everyone money increases demand while shutting down the economy makes the supply drop. What do you think happens then? Hyperinflation. This is a simplistic, but accurate enough, explanation just so you can hopefully understand.

@Dog.eatdog Without Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security spending, the US budget would be balanced with a 1-trillion-dollar-a-year surplus with the current income. If you remove all defense spending, which is absurd--but let's give it all to you, we're still in a deficit. I'm aware of how currency is generated and lost. I'm also aware of this thing called inflation. Each dollar essentially represents an equal share of a nation's wealth. The wealth of a nation is not something that can be created without work--it's not printed. As such, quantitative easing, as you suggest, causes inflation but having more units of currency in hand may provide a psychological effect which prompts some people to more freely spend money. However and as mentioned before, that does not change the wealth of a nation. When your wealth is declining sharply while you are divvying up that wealth between more units of currency, it causes much worse inflation than when there is only a secondary market downturn. "WHO earned that money?" The United States. "WHO should be beneficiary number one?" The United States. All money is backed by, created by and belongs to the United States. The United States is a representative democracy. Elected officials determine, democratically, in what way the money is best used for the United States as a whole. Our budget as it stands reflects those democratic choices.
