"on top of that historically the bill was written so that only people in a militia could bear arms too." Are you unaware that a militia is the CITIZENRY of the nation?   4. joe564338 You need to look up the 18th century usage of "well-regulated." I'll leave that at that. "...things arent in working order when you have things like the sandy hook shooting and the aurora shooting." The militia is not in working order when such things are able to happen unchallenged. State militias run by the state would be an army. States could not keep their own armies. Therefore, the right of the citizenry to arm themselves was granted.

Laws should be retroactive to an act, not proactive to what someone may do. And I guess you weren't aware that the Dick Act Federalized (effectively gutted) the militia and called it the National Guard, hm?

  10. Nugrat1 I had always wondered if it weren't our ingenuity and instead we developed poisonous spines, if we'd be having this discussion about the government forcing the removal of those spines. It's only because we depend on tools that we have this debate, I think.

When it comes to the militia and the right to keep and bear arms by the people, Jefferson explains it quite succinctly in his Tree of Liberty quote when he wrote, "Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusetts? And can history produce an instance of rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independent 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century & a half for each state. What country before ever existed a century & half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is it's natural manure."
