Beg to differ with you. USS Washington firing at Kirishima landed at least 27% of her main battery shots. This number came from viewing the wreckage of the Kirishima and counting the main battery hits. 27% is a hit ratio higher than most any other Navy can claim. Furthermore, that figure could be higher considering that Kirishima is a wreck on the bottom of the ocean and other hits may be obscured by mud & or darkness and wreckage. 27% confirmed at the least. Can you name a battleship that sank another battleship with a higher percentage of main battery hits?

In retrospect, Admiral Lee was MUCH MORE intelligent than MOST give him credit for being. Admiral Lee knew how dangerous the Japanese torpedoes actually really were. And in a surface battle, day time & especially night those torpedoes are NOT easy to see & so not easy to avoid. While in a carrier battle, the only torpedoes that can hit you are being dropped by planes & are much easily spotted & avoided. So risking a battle line engagement at night was much more tilted in favor of the Japanese than other US Admirals really wanted to admit. But Admiral Lee knowing the ships under his command had had no practice with each other in battle line surface actions at all & complicating that with a night time surface action would be even worse. Why had they NOT practiced any of these scenarios? Because they were too busy protecting the fleet carriers! And Admiral Lee knew this & knew that the safest way for the US Navy to proceed was with their carrier planes doing the heavy lifting and taking out enemy ships. Although it could have been an awesome battleship action, Admiral Lee was very intelligent and restrained to not risk his battleships when he really didn't have to do so. Probably the most selfless & intelligent decision by a US Admiral during the war. Thousands of US sailors may have died that night had Lee taken that line action. ❤❤❤❤❤

Well, HELLO??? Small wonder Admiral Lee did not try to take on that Japanese force at night. The previous action at Guadal Canal he had been on the Washington & did manage to sink a Battleship. HOWEVER, every other US ship was sunk except for the North Dakota which was pounded & had to withdraw. AND THE JAPANESE FORCE he would have to go against has THE YAMATO & MUSACHI BOTH TOGETHER!!! ADMIRAL LEE WAS VERY GOOD BUT EVERY BATTLESHIP PRESENT WOULD HAVE TO BE PERFECT & VERY LUCKY TO GO AGAINST 2 SHIPS WITH 18" GUNS!!! I have heard you say it many times, "most Navy's don't want a fair fight." And Admiral Lee probably saw that such a night engagement would be a huge risk & he didn't want to risk his ships & sailors when 1) he didn't need to and 2) he knew the carrier planes could take out those ships with much less risk of life. It really made no sense for Admiral Lee to risk the lives of thousands of young sailors when it was totally unnecessary. Air strikes would undoubtedly take out numbers of those Japanese ships. And then the survivors will flee.
