Your idea about the Italian guns wearing down their rifling and therefore giving the shells a reduced amount of spin & actually stabilizing the shells with the correct amount of spin is definitely something that could have easily happened. Or at least in my opinion. Especially if those gun barrels were spent after being fired only 100 times. When all of these other gun barrels last for 400 shots or more then that is only 25% of the life span of other battleship guns.

Wow, the thing you mentioned about the single most thing having a huge effect on the war: Pearl Harbor actually being on alert when attacked & the Japanese losing a lot of their pilots etc. There is also the idea that had this occurred it could have had the opposite effect in which the Japanese realize they needed to be able to train more & more pilots much earlier than they originally did. And figure out, like the US did that they needed their best pilots TRAINING new pilots rather than fighting the enemy. And them the "Mariana's Turkey Shoot" is no longer a turkey shoot but an all out brawl between 2 heavy weights. And although maybe the Japanese didn't accomplish as much in the 1st 6 months of the war but because of this the war becomes a little more long & drawn out. But, of course, in the end the US ends the war with the first use of nuclear weapons. Truly a shame that those people in Hiroshima & Nagasaki died in the manner they did. But because of those deaths tens of thousands were spared. Thinking about it: Maybe the invention of the atomic bomb was the single biggest thing. For then, the US would have invaded Japan & probably tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands would have died.
