Yeah, I admire the fact that Spruance was of the mind of NOT senselessly throwing away American lives. And if someone "complained" of him wanting to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, well that is NOT ONLY how you win a war, but how you win each battle & come out of each battle with a greater number of experienced men who will also assist in winning the next battle. The more you win with minimal loss the more confidence your forces have in your leadership & the better the moral is among them too. And rotation of pilots from fighting to teaching new pilots tactics & how to stay alive is probably one of the best tactics of the war & imho less appreciated than it really should be! And I'm guessing that that one thing saved countless pilot lives.

@EtuSunTzu One of the very first Wednesday Specials or "Rum Ration" I guess is a better description that I got to see from Drach was the video "What to do when/if your ship has become disagreeable & you MUST abandon ship." It was the extreme detail & seriously well thought out narrative. AND another thing that Drach did that also won me over was the shortened biography of "Able Bodied Seaman 'Just Nuisance'." And not only the fact that he did a special about a dog. But another cool thing too was he had his wife do the introduction. Since she had grown up around the proud statue she did the introduction. And she was basically better & had a smoother voice than Drach. But that small little intro from her & then Drach takes over just makes it cool & unique and it kinda makes me feel as though she's more of a dog lover than him. But the video is very well done just like ALL of his stuff. And the other thing I like about Drach is he doesn't shy away from people that might have a difference of opinion as long as it is presented in a respectful & thoughtful manor. And if you CAN'T state your view in a intelligent & respectful way then, "please don't bother!"

Thanks Drach, for letting us know that taking Tarawa & Makin was NOT easy by any stretch of the imagination & it took a great toll of lives lost to learn that landing craft were best sent in during a high tide. Spruance paying close attention to detail in planning future landings will lead to less American lives being lost.

@Bellephrontos Really, OK then, in that case name one battle that costed the US over 100,000 lives before Okinawa or Iwo Jima? Please.

@Bellephrontos Even still, most land "battles" in WW2 would usually result in an estimated 2k killed & about the same amount wounded while talking about most USA battles. Most of the things you name are "campaigns" rather than specific battles of those campaigns. Yeah, the battle of Manilla, I'll give you that one & the Battle of the Bulge to had a large amount of killed, casualties & surrenders. But even those were from weeks of fighting too, when most battles are usually a day or two.

And as far as the Aleutian Islands go, although retaking the Islands would prove to be rather easy, I think that they didn't really need to bother. Let's face it, the Japs were having trouble getting supplies to Guadal Canal. With Intelligence reading the Jap code they could simply take out any supplies being taken to the Aleutians. And the Japs would be forced to vacate. The weather there not being very hospitable is rather an understatement. So anyone's desire to stay there would be minimal.
