@andrewjones7126 I hope you both recover well & are quickly dismissed from hospital in short order & in good health! Thanks for sharing.

I don't understand WHY the info about a sonar contact was given to an Admiral INSTEAD of the Captain? The Captain SHOULD have been immediately supplied with the info of a sonar contact. Because the Admiral & the Captain have separate responsibilities! Basically with the Admiral not giving the information to the Captain, he himself was taking the Captain's responsibilities out of the Captain's hands. Because that should have been the Captain's call cuz he is ultimately responsible for the safety of the ship & the crew. And also would probably have a better idea of how experienced his sonar operator is. For the Admiral to ignore the contact is kinda stupid cuz why have a sonar operator if you're not going to follow up on a contact? If the sonar contact had been followed up, it would have maybe saved the ship. By ignoring it the Admiral totally doomed the ship. And totally disrespected the Captain by not giving him the information that could have saved his ship & 57 of his sailors. Plus whatever sailors were lost on the other ships trying to help defend her.

As an American that only knows English it sounded to me like that is what he said. Although BOTH appear that they would be pronounced the same except for being 2 words instead of one. But the pause he makes, I believe, is basically because of the difficulty in the pronunciation. It is NOT always easy to pronounce words from a language that you are not very familiar with.

@Cbabilon675 Arrogance? Or do you mean "ignorance?" Especially considering that information SHOULD HAVE been given to the Captain immediately! Considering the Captain is ultimately responsible for the safety of his ship & crew it was highly negligible to NOT furnish the Captain with this critical information! Admiral should have been flogged in front of Captain and crew!

@anysnail6390 Yeah, I had previously heard the name of the ship but only knew of it's "existence". I had previously NOT KNOWN of this particular voyage. That is why I LOVE this channel so much! I actually LEARN THINGS that happened that I was previously unaware happened.

Thank you for that very much. I had just woken up & saw you had a new video. I had never known about any of that. Thanks for the history lesson. So it was basically the Admiral's fault that the U-boat was able to just easily torpedo Edinburgh. Why have sonar if you are not going to heed the operator?? Yes, if a U-boat is that close it SHOULD be spotted if it's on the surface but at periscope depth during snow squals, not so much. And that is WHY they use the "ASDAC" or sonar. Evidently, the Admiral thought he was being smart but was horribly wrong! And it not only cost the Royal Navy the cruiser Edinburgh but more importantly costed 57 Royal Navy sailors their lives. And that was only the cost of the Edinburgh sailors. How many died aboard the destroyers trying to protect her from the Germans? The sailors knew that gold was bad news. People do have a "sixth" sense. It's a feeling. Similar to touch. And if that gold had NOT been aboard I seriously doubt that Edinburgh would have been sunk. Evil is known to follow certain things. And for me, I'm not surprised at all that the sailors felt that foreboding feeling after loading that gold aboard the ship. I would not have wanted that gold. I hope the salvage people sold the whole lot back to the Gov't. Even after sitting on the sea bed for 30-40 years that gold is still just as evil as it was the day they loaded it aboard Edinburgh. If I was the salvager I'd sale every bar & not keep any. If a Gov't has it in a Vault maybe the evil it holds will go away!

If you were a salvager, would you report each & EVERY bar of gold? OR would you stash a few away for "hard times" or to cash in upon your retirement? So five are "still missing?" Four for the main salvager & one for the only other person to know that five bars are really NOT unaccounted for.

What's the old saying? When you assume anything you make an ass/u/me. And during a war, assuming that a lookout is going to spot a periscope in high seas, or that a sonar contact is not real without first following up on the contact is imho not doing your due diligence for your job Captain or Admiral. And I do hope said Admiral was removed from active duty. Sounds like he was just lazy. Cuz, I mean, why would you NOT want to make sure?

@Drachinifel Wouldn't such a large shipment of gold be covered by insurance? I mean, I seriously think it would.

@Drachinifel The USSR may have insured it until it was actually delivered to the UK. Either that or because it was in the USSR territorial waters & that was part of the conditions of the salvage. Idk, even with the gold being loaded aboard a warship, you'd think that a cargo of such value would still have insurance. Not totally sure cuz different times & desperate measures. The USSR at the time was in dire straits with the Nazi's invading. And so just the show of faith of trying to send 5 million in gold(or ever how much it was at the time) to the UK was still a big deal. And yeah, Stalin was about as crazy as a bed bug but you also have to consider how cut throat all the Russians were at that time. Even Stalin's most loyal servants could have been just waiting for the opportunity to stab him in the back for a price. After the Russian Revolution it was just that bad, & Stalin knew it. And that's why he was so paranoid. And just to show his poor judgement, look at how he reacted to Nazi Germany invading Russia! It took him 3 days to get a grip that it was really happening & that he needed to respond. And because of it Russia was nearly over run. Only thing that saved the Russian's is that the country is just so huge & people that could flee away from German occupation did so. And that they had just so many people to try to stop the onslaught. Sorry. But I grew up around crazy people so I understand how they think & how they don't.

@AndrewGivens No, actually all of it is very new to me. And this is why I started watching this channel is because I wanted to learn things I didn't know about! I'm guessing from other comments that HMS Trinidad was the next ship to have Bonham-Carter aboard but I don't know the whole story of what all happened. And I also feel very sorry for the survivors of HMS Edinburgh minus B-Carter for the terrible luck they had getting sunk again aboard HMS Trinidad. Leads me to believe that Bonham-Carter had a bar of that gold in his luggage and so he was bringing the evil from that gold with him. And I do believe that evil can attach itself to such things. I don't know or understand why but rich people are sometimes very evil & their souls attach themselves to their riches. And somehow follow where it goes. That's the only way I can think of to explain it. Just like there are certain places where bad things happen regardless of how good people are that are there. I feel that way about where my parents built their house in South Carolina. I don't know what may have happened there before my Mom & Step-dad, Billy lived there but I do know that I NEVER want to go back there again. Something about that place is evil. We didn't realize before we built the house there. But I think my Step-dad, Billy wanted to leave there. And I believe, from what a neighbor told me, that my older brother killed Billy there. And I know for sure my brother tried to have someone kill my wife & I there. Luckily, because of my wife, we escaped with our lives. All of them are gone now. My Mom passed 3 months after my wife & I fled from there. And my brother died in 2019. My wife had passed away in 2015. So the only family I have is a daughter I haven't seen in 20 years. But I am a firm believer in God and good & evil. And I strongly believe that hatred brings evil. And that you can purge all hatred from your heart and mind. Sorry for the rant. But it's true. And I have asked for & believe that I saw a miracle happen. It wasn't huge but it was enough to make me know that it was real.
