As for the “kind”, stereotype… I agree with the point that Japanese people are particularly kind to people they are connected with in a clearly-defined way. I mean, there are very well-established cultural rules and norms for how to treat & speak to people etc, which is one of the reasons we have such a harmonious society here. But on the other hand, for people who we have no clear connection with (like someone on the train with you or whatever) there isn’t really that much expectation of…anything. It’s almost like people don’t bother to acknowledge each other’s existence until there is a reason to do so. All that said, most people in Japan are actually very kind…once they notice you exist! (Being a ‘foreigner’ does also work as a kind of social ice-breaker, in my experience.) Anyway, really interesting video, Takashi!

Well, my wife is Japanese but she doesn’t really fit any of those stereotypes... 😂

@xander_k_ ah. Yeah, I know what you mean. There definitely are a lot less ambiguous/awkward social situations here in Japan than back where I’m original from. (Canada.)

@AffyisAffy yeah, I agree. Maybe I should I should interview some people in my area. 🤔

I’d like to see (ask) that too.

@maegalroammis6020 that’s true in a way, for ‘shokunin’, or skilled craftspeople at least. But my Japanese friends who work as teachers and office workers are always complaining about working too much and needing more family/personal time. I’m pretty sure they would love to have an extra day off a week.

@maegalroammis6020 😆 Well, I’ve been here for the last 20 years, so the way people think/act here just seems normal now. (It doesn’t mean I agree with ALL Japanese social norms/expectations. But they make sense in this cultural context.)

Ah, good point.
