Another reason why people don’t stop wearing masks here in Japan has to do with the reason for wearing them in the first place. It was never “because the government said so”. Or not primarily anyway. In my opinion, wearing a mask (whether it’s during Flu season or because of the Covid-19 pandemic) is about showing respect to the people around you, by protecting them (actually or only in gesture) from yourself. This illustrates a central part of Japanese culture: limiting your own comfort and freedom a little bit for the good of society.
