  1. The many, many different names for guns could very easily be confusing to the non sailor, maybe even professional sailors had trouble telling them apart. It reminds me of the excellent BBC show Horrible Histories and the clip they did explaining the 'easy to understand' Tudor currency. You'll get a good laugh out of it.
