TheWarloo, Chaine Gaming Hey, no worries. I figured it was a language difference, sorry if I sounded insulting. Basically both the 1918 above and the Berthier use a "follower" to push on the cartridges which then lift the clip. The clip simply holds the cartridges together in a row. Because the five round Berthier rifle was designed to be compatible with the three round clips already in use and the five round clip designed for this purpose;. The 1918's use of the five round clip would at least insinuate or imply that you could use the three round clip as well, but without testing we won't know. What follows is the above Google translated into French, hopefully between the two it makes sense.

TheWarloo, Chaine Gaming but so were the later Berthiers and the three round clips worked in that

TheWarloo, Chaine Gaming Actually they are very similar. Neither one has the clip "fixed in the rifle". After that either your translation use or poor English grammar makes your point and meaning kinda hard to understand. I think you mean the "follower" attached to the round piece of metal that swings out from the bottom of the rifle? The Berthier also has that, but it's hidden inside and not seen during normal reloading. This pushes the bullets and therefore the clip up into the rifle and it's why the later Berthiers could accept either the three or five round clips. Watch Ian's videos on the Berthiers for more information.

TheEchoholic Your first two solutions would have opposite effects, no? One would increase bolt travel speed, the other decrease, if I'm understanding the physics right (entirely possible I'm not).
