@kasuha arguably there's actually more 33khz crystals around than any other. Many devices are outfitted with two crystals, one in the 8-20MHz range for their active mode and a 33KHz one to enable ultra low power interrupt and RTC functionality while the rest of the device is powered down.

Just don't put the MEMS oscillator in helium.

Cryptography has a demand for sources of randomness and fundamentally watches can ve used, just like someone is using a video feed of a bunch of lava lamps. But it's not super convenient, when you can trivially make an electronic noise circuit, you just have to amplify the shot noise from a resistor. Modern processors often include such a circuit for true random seed data. Unfortunately the better the watch is, the worse it is as a source of randomness, and a lot of decorrelation is needed for average watches already.

@steffeneilers8530 wait why. I finished school on a Tozai calculator that cost me 10 DM. It was a Sharp EL-506P clone and it was gorgeous. I wish I could still get one like that in good condition. I mean I can get functionally identical ones for like $4 but aesthetically they are garbage.

@Enrico- so basically Bulova.

Yeah if you wanted your phone to tell time in the 80s, you could but it wasn't convenient and would cost you like 40 cents for the premium phone call.
