US citizenship beats Chilean citizenship for those who intend to have a location-based source of income; but for those who are able to achieve a location-INDEPENDENT source of income.... and who are able to achieve a lot OF it (income, that is)... Chilean citizenship could well be superior.

@klwthe3rd If it's just a "business arrangement", then it IS illegal in many countries... and SHOULD be illegal, particularly in those countries that offer a lot of entitlements.

@klwthe3rd Yeah, Cape Verde could be a good one in that it provides instant citizenship upon marriage.

@Ricky Vanish I would draw a distinction between (a) a marriage in which the two people FULLY INTEND to make a life together, and (b) a marriage in which the two people understand that it is solely for the purpose of getting citizenship, and nothing more. If governments were to make it very, very easy to get citizenship by marriage, that would be tantamount to an "open borders" policy. I think it's a terrible idea to allow any person of any country to acquire citizenship in any other country.... REGARDLESS of his health status, REGARDLESS of his criminal record, and REGARDLESS of his ability to contribute to (or propensity to take from) that other country.

@Ricky Vanish I strongly disagree with the proposition that the "will of the citizens" should not matter. Rather than arguing over what "doesn't matter", perhaps we can agree that there are different interested parties in the immigration debate, and there will be pronounced differences in their respective views and preferences. And, FWIW, I am a US citizen... BUT, there is virtually no country on earth which I would NOT want to get a 2nd citizenship from... if it were easy to get. (And no, I don't see a contradiction here).

@Ricky Vanish I actually agree with you 100%... IF I ONLY CONSIDER THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE PERSON SEEKING CITIZENSHIP. Our disagreement appears to be over the question of whether anyone else's perspective matters.

That would be true for someone seeking US citizenship, but it might not be true at all in the case of someone seeking citizenship from some other country.
