I know an American who's living in a small Japanese town, and he's in denial about his Japanese language skills though. He says that he's there because it's better for his Japanese, but, just like this woman noted, it's really up to the student. In his case, it's not working for him, but he's so sure that it is. He really needs to get into Tokyo to get his butt kicked by other Americans and other westerners to see that there are many others around learning more than he is. The problem with him being in a small town is there's nobody to compare himself to, so he thinks he's King Shit of Turd Island. There's even a Japanese language school in his neighbourhood, but he's never been. Living in a small town CAN be great for your Japanese, but it's up to you what you make of the situation.
