  2. It's been surveyed that 3 out of every 4 Americans are interested in virtual reality. And it's not about Facebook, they are just one player in a broader market. There's passionate communities that don't care one bit for facebook or crypto or nft's but still very much enjoy vr and the experiences that it enables.

  5. Metaverse is actually an inspiring idea. Just not a Facebook controlled one. It's an idea that is in the imaginary and the dreams of many who have seen it in movies. And this video is not about Facebook's metaverse.

  12. The metaverse is not facebook's. Facebook is just one of many players in the area. And apparently facebook succeeded in convincing many people that they are the metaverse, which is the worst thing that could happen, as people trying vr will end up in meta's platform instead of trying better ones and hopefully slightly less crappy companies. FB's horizon worlds is crap. VRChat is incomparably better. Never played Second Life, but in vr there's far richer experiences than that can be had through a computer screen. It's immersive enough that you do feel like you walked into a place. A nature reserve, a cinema, a disco, some game. People in front of you, talking to you face to face, even touching you. That's the experience you get. I have never played second life, but... vr is not something where you play dolls, it's something where you play in fullest first person experience.

The metaverse is a space with numerous projects and companies, facebook simply changes it's name to convince people that they are the metaverse when in fact they are not. And the FTC has made it clear that they do not intend to let facebook become the owner of the metaverse.

  18. Actually it did impress many adults, and it's actually a valuable tool for some businesses' needs. But obviously adults have less time on their hands and are already set on their ways. And go like "whhhhaAAaaat is this new technology that frightens me" and "how do I navigate this technologically changing landscape, why are there so many buttons? why are there no buttons? how is a toddler working my tablet like a pro while I can't find the button to turn on the screeEeen".

  19. IoT is very much a thing. Businesses just use it a lot more edge cases than regular people. And still, everyone has a virtual assistant on their phone, alexas are common, rombas are IoT devices, so is my car (and that's going to spread with the number of hybrid and electric car), oh right my fridge and TV and cable box are also IoT devices. You don't hear about it cause it's already seamlessly integrated all around you. It's likely that the same will happen with augmented reality.

  25. I think you are conflating 2 things: people intentionally spreading lies for political/personal gain vs reading a book and being transported to an entertaining story. In one you are being deceived, in the other you are not being deceived. The metaverse does not bring one away from reality in a sense of being lied to. Also, in the metaverse you interact with people not too differently from people who you're talking to or playing with face to face. That is not more alienating than face to face interactions.

  29. Etherium (the second biggest crypto) now uses less than 1% of what it used to. So it already doesn't use much electricity. And democratizing access to financial services can benefit people who haven't had access to financial services so far in empoverished countries. Besides, accessing the metaverse with full immersion requires the computational power of a gaming pc or of a console. It's something that people already have for their entertainment.

True, it is worrying how misinformation might find a new base in this new technology, how the high amount of very personal information might be used by companies like facebook, and how people's freedom might be intentionally limited in this space where company's power is near absolute rather than being based on democratic principles. Recently, on vrchat's metaverse, that happened: the company, vrchat inc, made a decision that anticheat would be implemented into the platform. Users were not heard on the matter, many thousands protested in all sorts of ways, and even review bombed the heck out of it. But the company announced they would not change their decision. That sort of thing doesn't bode well for freedom in this new land.

  40.  @LEV1ATHYN  You're very uninformed. Horizon - (by facebook/meta) is just one of various universes in the metaverse. So this is not about facebook, just like the smartphone is not about apple. and actually facebook has been quite successful in headset sales. They lose money because they are doing a very aggressive expansion - like amazon did to undercut the competition (and yes, amazon was losing money, and they had massive long term success from it). The public hates facebook, and for good reason. The public is mostly ignorant about the metaverse. Which, again, is not facebook.

  42.  @perceivedvelocity9914  People have been interested in this for a long time, and it's made its fair share of appearances in sci-fi. Companies have pushed this quite a few times, it's just that the technology (especially the computing power and internet speeds) weren't quite there yet. But now it's ripe for the taking. There's been estimates of up to a trillion dollars up for grabs in this space. That is a heck of a lot of money even for the biggest corporations. But as much of a gold mine as this can be, it also connects with people's long standing dreams about this subject and also their basic desires for entertainment, long distance communication, artistic expression, etc.

And it's had generally positive reviews until they recently implemented anticheat and got review bombed for it. I also left a negative review and I'm still of the opinion that it's incredible. The current review bombing goes to show how committed users are to it and how much they want to participate - the revolt is literally because we are not being allowed to participate through modding, and we want to.

  44. "metaverse colaborate with neurolink" metaverse is not an entity, it's a whole group of technologies and companies. You probably mean "Meta collaborate with neurolink", which makes more sense, as meta is a company. It's unlikely though, elon musk's attacks on meta make it seem like he has his own plans regarding a more technologically advanced metaverse of his own making.
