the issue is that capitalism creates wild asymmetries, and unchecked it would be all-consuming. It's bad to have courts where you simply pay for justice to go your way, it's bad when whole communities fall behind in the generation of wealth, and it's bad when individual people take risks and end up in economic distress, it's bad when someone starts from a disadvantageous position while others start off from positions that are much more comfortable. Markets can and should be allowed to collapse, but that needs to be counterbalanced with strong aid for people's lives to not be ruined in the process as if people's lives were just some collateral. Capitalism and growth are not a goal in themselves, they are a means to serve individuals, and not just some individuals, every single one of us.

@startrekmaniac1701 it's just capitalism. You pay me every time you touch anything made or owned by any company in the stock market. You pay the cost of whatever you are buying plus you pay me some more on top of that cost. All because two generations ago my grandparents worked really hard and got lucky enough in life. And their gone. And there's me, so you pay me cause I have a piece of paper that says that now you pay me. And since i don't touch the principal, I'll be passing along a piece of paper to potentially countless generations. Because of my grandfathers. But it's capitalism. So it's fair. And so be glad to pay me for never having done anything for you. Cause it's the right thing. Pay 3x for a phone, that is projected to have a specific lifetime so you will spend more money on new phones as often as you can possibly be milked. All that overcharge and duplication of costs to pay some rando whose grandfather did something, possibly before you were born. I thought you didn't like handouts tho

@startrekmaniac1701 so is capitalism

@startrekmaniac1701 That would be wonderful. But while some have great opportunities, others are born into a life of disadvantage. And by its very nature capitalism ever stretches the inequality. Life is not what you make it, that's a lie. Life is a complex interplay of factors where your effort is only one of those factors. and I don't need a job. Capitalism gives me my handouts, which your hard earn cash pays for in widespread overcharges on everything you buy. ain't you happy that capitalism imposes taxes on you that go towards those that don't even need it? Ineficnencies inefficiencies.
2
@freesk8 Exactly. Their government collects large amounts of taxes to redistribute wealth and fund public endeavors, along with having ownership of public interest companies (water, oil, electricity, ...).
2
@startrekmaniac1701 no, capitalism creates inequality, leaving some people lazy and often leaving hard workers empty-handed. Not to mention that's patently absurd to have a justice system based on whoever pays walks. Capitalism simply cannot exist in a vacuum. It must always be regulated and adequately counterbalanced so it doesn't run amuck.

@startrekmaniac1701 wtf. Victim blaming a murdered person... fun. And people of color are still living the effect of credit denials and red lines, suppression that did happen, and which created generations of wealth gap.

@startrekmaniac1701 oh you had another comment. Alright. Taxes are to keep the government running? No. Taxes are for whatever the population wants them to be. And to have a higher level of education for the new generations is actually a good investment. Way to go. Having parents wealth rather than kids grades determine whether they go to college is a way to underutilize existing talent and to brew a more ignorant population. Neither of those is good. At only 1% of welfare recipients using drugs, that's not the issue. Removing welfare on this basis would just target those who actually need it for their basic needs. I thought it was clear that I live on something like inheritances and investments, and not welfare. But regardless, I would pass a drug test. I like programming, I find it best done while not intoxicated. And just like I still make myself useful even though I don't need to make a living, so does research show that welfare recipients are no less likely to be motivated to work. It's like people actually want to have a better life, and have purpose and persuit useful things they genuinely like, crazy right?! Damn ain't you a walking talking bag of crappy political clichés lmao. I advise you to seek reputable non-partisan sources and dig a bit deeper into the claims that you're making.

@startrekmaniac1701 I don't really find cnn neutral enough. And talent is more than just the top students. A graduate with mediocre grades can still be a great contribution to society. And hello? democracy? Ever heard of it? The government is representing the people. And while you're paying me enough that I don't have to bother myself with anything I don't want to do. I still program, provide mostly free services or donation based services, learn and mentor other people. All together it takes up a nice chunk of my time, sometimes even too much.

@startrekmaniac1701 I sleep nice and comfortable. And you're paying for it.

@freesk8 Having welfare and public services actually further reduces poverty. It's not even a binary choice.
1
@aidanaldrich7795 There isn't because it would be very wrong and absurd. Capitalism applied to anything where it could be applied would be catastrophic. It's undeniable that human hand must intervene and limit and counterbalance it.
1
@aidanaldrich7795 Actually there are limits imposed to how far you can take those. You can't just settle your way out of anything, especially not serious crimes.

@josephstorrud8050 yeah cause it's great having extinctions, predators eating the prey, injured getting left to die, it's great and nothing better could ever be conceived of. 👍👍👍
1
@josephstorrud8050 oh and capitalism does not even regulate itself. It requires intervention such as to not result in monopoly.
