  2. Most people who have tried vr think otherwise. I have vr. And the sense of presence is there. You actually feel like you're in a certain place. And there's experiences to be had there, that you couldn't have irl. You will barely even notice the senses that are absent. For the vast majority of the experiences, it doesn't even matter. Not to mention that increasingly people have long distance friends that they meet in games and this brings them into your living room. where you can have an experience best described as talking to them face to face. You still have movies in vr, as if you had your own personal cinema (that you can bring other people into if you wish), and you still have video games, and even books. And if escapism is what you're looking for, this is next level escapism.

Funny, I got a talk about pitfalls of current internet economy already overflowing into the metaverse, about interoperability requiring both technical and legislative frameworks, and about equality and positivity in the metaverse requires careful consideration and rethinking paywalls and data silos. But all you got was green hair.

  7.  @MicaelaMantegna  😅 I'm passionate about the topic. I use vrchat a lot. From a graphics standpoint it's way ahead of the competition. Recently they made a change that many thousands of users were against. Many of us looked for alternatives, but they are not as developed (worse fbt tracking, low quantity of users and user produced content, lack of support for android/quest). Many people returned to vrchat despite being dissatisfied, which shows the power of these companies to keep people in their platforms despite dissatisfaction. Open standards, self data ownership and interoperability are crucial to keep these platforms serving the community, rather than exploiting the community. Btw, I find your dressing style choice to be quite on point to represent some of the stylistic and cultural freedom of the metaverse, and how it expands horizons and can translate into increased openness and acceptance of ourselves and others.

Takeaway points regarding technical solutions are not for the average person to directly act on, but the communities that constitute the metaverse still hold influence the course of these technologies, so there's still room for new projects and activism.

It's great business for facebook. But it's a crap outlook for people concerned with facebooks shady practices and mismanagement. I would like to see something like the w3 consortium building metaverse's foundation rather than companies like Facebook.

  14. lol my guy it's an urban myth. To this day there has been 0 evidence of tech giants improperly listening to your conversations. It's hilarious when you said it was for ideas for Hollywood lmfao The thing about your landlord kicking someone out for a post they made on FB, that's a real concern. I think we need to have definite agreement regarding what is personal and what is not, and what is legitimate to do with such information. Sometimes it's no different than making public statements out in the street for anyone to hear. And you're also right about tech and not letting it distract from important things. But I think with AR that is different, as it does not obstruct your view. I think that's also where we're heading to - to a world augmented with digital things (like floating TV or a digital chessboard) rather than full-on VR immersion.

  15. A game doesn't have to be a metaverse gateway. But especially social vr would benefit from interoperability so that people and assets don't get siloed. If this seamless connection doesn't happen, we might see Facebook becoming the metaverse, holding the vast majority of people and their main assets.

A more traditional approach would be to have a standard that 3rd party companies hired by the end user could use to provide access to content to whatever application the user is on.

  23. Actually, this is a medium that provides the most level of seeing with your own eyes than any other created so far. It's not that real life isn't enough, it's that this adds to it. With experiences that can't be had anywhere else, at an already remarkable level or quality, and still increasing to matching 20/20 vision in the very near future (it already exists, it's just 4-6 times more expensive than most high end technology).

  30. they usually have snap turning and tunel vision so that you don't feel as motion sick. But some people just don't bind well with the current technology. You might have to wait for some kind of substantial improvement. Increased framerate usually helps.

Looking at subredditstats for r virtualreality, the subscriber number shows exponential growth. Clickbait news about the death of metaverse are just a hypetrain based on nothing. We will be talking for a long time.

  40. Yessss, you get it! Metaverse is most of all, a social landscape. It will get done. It already exists. It's just siloed. So it's about making it right this time. But that's easier said than done. People often don't care, people who care often don't believe they have the power to change things, individually it's impossible to change things even when dealing with "smaller" companies. It would really take a massive concerted effort which is rather hard to achieve. Or well crafted thoughtful and correct legislation, which can be hard to come by.

They are not really copycats other than the basic facts of being social vr. Ignoring it seems like a solution, until you realize you need to get the vast majority of people ignoring it. And that doesn't seem to be going that way. Basically, even if people dislike facebook or other companies (people are usually more benevolent to the ones that are new), they still want the experiences and features being provided. There's no stopping this technology, there's just making a better alternative.

  47. I think it's only not mainstream because people haven't realized how advanced it already it. I think vrchat is a prime example. Check out some footage or something. It's rather remarkable. For business matters I think it will take a few years for more powerful portable hardware and for higher resolution to make it comfortable to use it as a replacement for a pc monitor.

Vr can enable real time face to face talks with the speaker (or anyone really), sharing of 3d models you can explore with others, and most of all, it can enable all those seamlessly at the same time. It's how online learning has a retention rate of like 25% and vr increases it to 75%. While being digitally generated the brain interprets it as reality, possibilitating the range of experiences of first person interactions.

This talk mentions data ownership and interoperability, I think making users the owners of the data and creating standards for interoperability might be the path to removing control away from facebook.

  59.  @AskWhyMoreOften  Especially there should be laws mandating that people own the data, not corporations, and that people must have easy access to it through open standards. Much of the power a company like Facebook has resides in keeping user data locked away under their control.

  60.  @LevSlinsen  True. I think activism tends to be a lot about popularizing the issue so that there starts to be some pressure for things to move at all levels. To be honest I don't know how how to solve the issue of interoperability: many vr platforms are extremely different (some are basic looking in order to be performant, others are heavy but with a lot better graphics and there are often unique mechanics). Porting high detail objects into a low poly platform poses a bit of a problem even if there is full compatibility. But there's maybe a key starting point where there should be some simple interoperability: a person's basic profile and their friend's list. I don't think facebook would love that, but it would be great for competition, and that's exactly the point.

  61.  @LevSlinsen  It doesn't matter the specific protocols, it matters having an agreement between platforms. It's like saying a "trojan horse", and you go like oh but you don't have the mold. The mold doesn't freaking matter, it can take any number of shapes and still get the same result. The key here is not some random technical specification, but a broad agreement to bring one to fruition. The issue here is that these big players might not be interested in such an agreement, no matter what form or shape it takes.
