The Dutch have never forgotten their Canadian liberators. Every spring, Ottawa is covered in fresh Dutch tulips.

They were almost all volunteers, highly motivated, generally better educated than their British and American counterparts and carrying a culture and reputation of being the best Allied troops on the Western Front in WWI. By the way, Canada fielded a military of 1.1 million from a population of 11 million ... one in ten Canadians.

"the Hasting & Prince Edward Regiment" ... also known as "The Hasty Pees"

When you look at this footage, you see happy Dutch people smiling back to the camera, even putting their children in front of the lens and telling them to smile and wave. Now, look at footage from Germany taken about the same time. They hide their faces, they turn away in shame or at best, scowl back. No, this was LIBERATION.

Says 1945 in the title ... The Canadians fought their brutal "Polder War" from 1944 into 1945. At the time that the Americans were fighting their "Battle of the Bulge" the Canadians were to the North of them fighting on muddy drowned lad.

The Germans treated the Dutch very shabbily: starvation, reprisals, imposing a brutal police state on peace-loving people. It's amazing that the Dutch have made friends with them, again so soon.
