that's actually kind of funny as well because navy ships and army headquarters needed tons of very complex teletypes that were made by the same companies

@MarvinCZ na the US is right behind germany with our love of paperwork, the scale of the war time government is like on par with the size of the government today. The Pentagon back then didn't have enough office space

the ww2 system worked almost miraculously given how patents and red tape snare things up. From what I've read one of the reasons was that 1) as you mention, the Government, not individual companies, purchased the machinery for these companies and 2) the gauging and production jigs for say a M1, were manufactured by the gun manufacturers who were loosing part of the contracts, thus maybe sweatening the deal for them since they're notoriously fickle companies when it comes to gun contracts.3) Then ontop of all this the US just had more authority back then to command companies to shut up, like the aircraft manufacturers being forced to contract out subcomponents that they would normally want to keep in house for more profit

I would say the Pentagon HAS the logistics capability that springfield had, but we maybe don't have a dedicated small arms development group like them who had they survived the 60s probably would have transitioned into being more of a review board and less a manufacturer. certainly the way the army aquires small arms could use significant improvement (though that too may have finally worked itself out) maybe between darpa and the weird offices of the pentagon we're fine
