100 years ago is not 2023. The rest of the world is in 2023 - you cannot compete with them with standards based on a whole century prior. If you don't compete, you lose to China, to Korea, to Taiwan, to Hong Kong and to Singapore. And these are not even G7 nations. If you factor in the EU and the US, things are much more grim. Look at the yen vs the Singapore dollar now. Barely 5 or 10 years ago, the yen was almost twice as strong, now it's weaker than SGD and it's 1 USD to 140 yen now. All the investment and money are flowing to other Asian hubs while Japan is content to turn in on itself and stick its head in the sand.
