Soviet combatant losses are around 2:1 to German losses. That ratio falls when you include other axis allies. That figure skyrockets when you include civilians. Welcome to the war of extermination. Now you know where the 10 or 20 to 1 myth comes from, it's counting civilians (where do partisans come from?) among combatants...

@richardadams8036 even in 1941 you're not getting 10:1 kill ratios unless you include prisoners who later die in prisoner of war camps Did I mention? This was a war of extermination.

it in fact depends on what / who counts; only Germans? Or all axis powers? Or only some? What about Russian civilians - partisans, or suspected partisans?

Sorge's most interesting role will prove to be the debunking of the "Roosevelt knew about Pearl Harbor beforehand" myth but only at the time the Russian government so desires.

TIK you better get very factual on the fine points of this biased article with some sources... Just because you agree with someone doesn't make them right.

When you count Hungarian and Rumanian forces it's kind of an obvious oversight to omit the fact that most of them are stationed respectively in Hungary and Rumania due to mutual mistrust. In numbers the USSR forces ranged against the Germans consistently at all points outnumbered the axis forces fielded in the east. Also the article wrongly states that BTs and T-26 (which it doesn't even bother to name) were "outdated" when in fact they are equivalents to Pz. II and Pz III at this stage of the war. T-26 is not a terrible tank, just ask Japan... The hull was reconfigured into the SU-76 a very capable tank hunter.

have all you noobs figured out that Russians constantly lie? don't believe me, look at Ukraine, Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea. Or Syria. Honest accounts conclude the nazis killed off lots of Russians. Don't believe me? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ56MYa9W8M&t=548s Nazis lost the war and won the peace. And Russians HATE that fact. Everything else is fudge topping on the shit cake.

Sorge was effective. )

In other words anyone arguing the USSR didn't have the absolute shit kicked out of it is wrong.

@popsey72 is obviously just a snipe more interested in chopping up wood into small neat piles than knowing the facts

@Кремень-ц8ю Stalin and Russians would never lie would never pretend their eyes were closed pretend to look the other way and smile ) Between "you are racially inferior" and "I believe all the horseshit Stalin is shoving down my throat since there is nothing to eat" there is a thing called truth. It is not generally found by those people who think everyone else is and idiot as in "I explain to idiots". Russian culture is kinda fucked, unfortunately. But keep telling yourself you are the best and brightest when in fact your culture is basically violent, dishonest, andabove all drunk and insane. But do tell us how we're inferior especially if we're not white that's always hilarious.
1
@Кремень-ц8ю I guess the first step is to figure out this: you live in a thoroughly corrupt violent mafia state, where everythng is kept in semi-legality (also known as illegality) so the authoritarian government can crack down on anyone anytime: corruption as governance. Xaxaxaxa!
1
@Кремень-ц8ю правильно? ты просто дурак. я знаю точно обо я сказал. ты - лжец.

@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 Stalin, like anyone, has "confirmation bias". People Want to hear what they already think, what they already believe. I don't think Stalin was so surprised as people in the west think. He was specifically preparing for a nazi invasion since the 1930s and said so quite openly and through cultural and diplomatic channels as well. To the extent Stalin was surprised that was due to British (not U.S.) intelligence efforts. Perfidious Albion!

TEXOCMOTP That BTs and T-26s could be defeated by German AT weaponry is not the issue; rather whether that tank is outdated. To be outdated you must not only be able to be defeated but also unable to defeat the opponent. So all tankettes by 1941 are outdated , even already in 1940. We don't debate whether the Renault FT-17 was outdated because it was due to low speed thin armor bad cannon but at least it had a cannon and in that sense is superior to the tankettes in other words: it was even less outdated. I believe T-70 might be outdated in 1941. I must check the stats on that one. There are plenty of outdated USSR tanks in 1941 but the BTs and T-26s are still combat capable, though by 1943 at lates they are indeed outdated (except when reconfigured as SU tank destroyers..)
1
@Dimovuha222 while soviet optics were inferior, radios other than in company commanders' vehicles absent, and indeed crew were too few they were not outdated in terms of gun, armor, or tracks+engine. they were no more or less outdated than French tanks and were definitely superior to Italian tanks. Gun and Armor were about equal to German tanks, speed was superior. I don't know about maintenance or fuel consumption; since USSR was a net fuel exporter I expect fuel economy was no issue and probably inferior to German vehicles.

TEXOCMOTP last time we had this conversation I was pointing out that Pz. II can function effectively in reconnassance anti-partisan and deep rear area operations but obviously cannot be a breakthrough tank by 1942. My point today was simply to say one cannot write off the BTs and T-26s in 1941 even though by 1942 they could only be useful as tank destroyers notably SU-76. BT and T-26, useless in 1942 (unless upgunned with a casemate) are still useful tanks in 1941. Without the optics and radios I might say similarly about Pz. II in 1942 but nazis, unlike USSR have a lot of anti-partisan and convoy escort duties which USSR does not have. So outdated partly depends on role.
1
@EstellammaSS like I already said all tankettes are outmoded by 1941 (even by 1940) and T-26 and BT are both outmoded by 1942. Thanks for pointing out they are unreliable, that doesn't surprise me though I suspect the unreliability is due to bad manufacturing and maintenance rather than a bad design...

@EstellammaSS T-26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaBlg5pxe-4 45 mike mike makes this a playable build i.m.o. "It was actually quite a good tank in its day" - God has spoken.

G in German is prounced like G as in Good. German spelling and pronunciation is regular, like Spanish, the word always sounds like it's written with the exception of a few loan words (which are often pronounced by less lingual natives as they would be in German). Sorge by the way means, "care". His name is likely fake. Sorge's intelligence confirmed others' reports allowing Stalin to relocate 3 corps from the east which decisively contributed to the defense of and counterattack from Moscow in 1941-1942. I read the article. It misapprehends Sorge's contribution which contributed to and confirmed lots of other intelligence (Soviet codebreaking of JN25 / purple, Japanese force disposition, the outcome of Khalkin Gol, and other spies who remain nameless to this day). )

TEXOCMOTP SORGE winds up being tortured and executed by the Japanese. Any source is going to be inaccurate at times and sources are also going to be targeted for disinformation. I already said i believe in this thread that SORGE's main role was confirmatory. Stalin already had a good idea that Japan wasn't going to be able to attack strategically; it's army had been bested at Khalkin Gol and was also quite busy fighting in China. SORGE (and Soviet decryption of JN25) confirmed Stalin's views. I don't regard SORGE as trying to set Stalin up to believe the nazis would not attack. Stalin believed he would be able to attack first but was still waiting for the ideal time. By 1941 all the spies and counterspies who were disloyal had been blood purged. This is also why I regard SORGE as a true source. You are welcome to contradict me. SMERSH.
