Those attempts failed, some earlier, some later. Nowadays the West plays dangerous game with Russia. All cheap talks about 'defending human rights of ukranians, defending europe' are for naive and badly educated persons. The funny thing is that westerners underestimated ukranians. They exploite westerners for their own interests, not asking but already demanding money, weaponry, ammunitions.
