@owenrussell5162 The Germans had the Ukraine so food was no longer an issue. And the Germans had repulsed tank offensives before, see the Battle of Cambrai.

@owenrussell5162 Alright let's see what would happen if this plan went ahead. Just like Cambrai, it is initially even more successful. But then the Germans launch a devastating counterattack, and the battle is once again, inconclusive. And having Ukraine kinda does mean you get loads of food. It's why Hitler planed a greater priority on it than Moscow to deal with the famine in Axis occupied Europe.

@owenrussell5162 The Ukrainian People's Republic was established in April 1917, and the wheat harvest season starts in July, so it wouldn't be too much time. And the reason why the Germans couldn't just counterattack when the Americans showed up is that America doubled the Entente's strength. Germany can handle at most one Britain and one France.

@owenrussell5162 Fair enough, but American forces by the end of the war made up 30% of the Allied Western Front. That is huge! What is a naval blockade going to do when you have Ukrainian grain and Ruhr coal? And how many Mark Vs would be required to replace 30% of Americans who made up the Western Front, or at least actually hold the ground instead of being pushed back at Cambrai?

@owenrussell5162 The Allied forces were just as exhausted as the Germans. Any side that got America would have won. German rations actually increased by 40% between summer 1917 and summer 1918.

@owenrussell5162 You're missing the point. If the Americans sided with the Germans, the Germans would have won because of that. The Americans sided with the Allies, and the Allies won because of that. The Allies weren't exhausted? It took the work of a national hero to stop the French from striking in 1917. Both sides were as exhausted as each other. The most important factor for an Entente victory in WW1 was American involvement.

@owenrussell5162 Still, how were they not exhausted as Germany, when the French went on strike a full year and a half before the Kiel Mutiny?
