  1. WWII arguably started when the late 1930's/early 1940's conflicts became interlocking, and spread across the globe.

  2. Technically, WWII is still ongoing. Japan and USSR had agreed to an armistice, but had never signed a peace treaty. Russia still holds what Japan calls their "Northern Territories": Kunashiri, Shikotan, Etorofu, and the Habomai group. Until this issue become resolved, WWII isn't over.
