My grandmother was also happy to hear that her grandkids can speak some polish. During polish secession period strong nationalist movement emerged mainly because of the ban of our schools and forced education in polish language (and many other things actually). On the bright side our grandparents didn't suffer massive artificial famine in the eastern part of our country occupied by the soviets. We even have this saying in ukrainian: "Who lived good under the polish rule - lives good now".

This story somewhat reminded me of one book by Hernando de Soto that I read in the supermarket, his main idea is to give the poor the rights for their land. Funny enough, he was the main economic adviser during Alberto Fujimori presidency and was the main ideologist behind his economic reforms.
