@JeffPar50 ukraine has ONE fortress left in the entire oblast. Chasiv yar. if that falls, there is nothing but open ground upto the river. russia might not have made large territorial gains, but they have broken through three consecutive fortress cities in a row. There is no defensive line further back before the dnieper.

@JeffPar50 have you see the location of kramatosk? it is east of kharkiv and north of Donetsk itself. doesnt matter how fortified it is if the frontline passes it. right now, chasiv yar and kharkiv are anchoring the ukrainian defences. loss of either would collapse one of the flanks of the ukrainian army. remember last year when the russian armies flank collapsed? they lost a few thousand km in a few weeks.

@TimMountjoy-zy2fd well, that is the problem. russia can afford the loses. ukraine cant. russia has not even needed to do a single conscript mobilization. ukraine is on its fifth. And equipment loses mean nothing if they are just allowed to capture territory and drag the equipment back home to be repaired and sent back. the problem is not that ukraine is on the defensive. the problem is they cant hold their positions.
