  23. The sun gives off a lot more energy than we can harness but even the most effective solar panels absorb 1/3 of the energy. And thats the absolute best case and not anything that can be massed produced. Major issue with solar besides it being only used in the day time is it takes up a whole lot more land than other forms of energy. Plus all those materials need to be mined too so its honestly less eco friendly than a lot of people think

Saying dont worry about improving them means we're stuck with pretty poor power supply. Second major issue is when people use power. (hint its when its dark and solar panels dont work). Third you would have to have a huge amount of land for them to power a city. Land that would be used for forests, farms, housing, anything. You cant fight climate change while destroying the planet. Fourth no even giant solar farms today can't power everything so it wouldn't be feasible especially if we don't improve them

They have a high initial investment and don't return it for a near decade but when you spend millions instead of a few thousand, investors don't want to deal with that. If you really want to help the environment, digging up the earth for lithium, silicone, copper and other materials for thousands of homes is far worse than a single building

  58. I think you're making it seem darker than it really is. I live in the midwest and theres corn and soy fields everywhere. Yes we produce enough food for everyone and then some but we dont always feed everyone. We have cows, pigs, sheep, horses, chickens, and other animals that also eat these foods. 31 million cows and each one eats about 50-100 pounds of food a day. That doesn't just come from thin air. And in return of feeding these animals, we get food, leather, transportation, wool and other resources. And what about putting ethanol in gas to reduce emissions? That comes from corn too. So while you're thinking companies just want people to starve, the real reason its not cost effective is because we don't only grow food for humans to eat. We use the food we grow for making more food and other usable resources

Once you build the powerplant you're set for at least half a century. Point is they both require mining which is harmful but if we're going to do it we might as well do the option that requires mining for less and having it last longer

  61. Because renewable energy isn't actually the game changer that the media is making you think it is. Solar only works on sunny days, not at night when power is the highest. Wind isn't constant and you will have days will wind turbines running with brakes on to not over charge or they will not be moving and become erie sights. Hydrologic can be damaging to water ecosystems and costs a lot for big dams. With oil, its cheap and constant power output and has been available for over a century now. Nuclear is the best choice as it takes the benefits of oil and reduces their cons

  63. The thing about China and India is if you're going to encourage people to use your country to build, figure out how to do it better. Figure out how to not dump plastic in the ocean and reduce CO2 emissions. They are still entirely at fault for that. Think of driving. While you could take the nicer highway with $5 tolls, you could also take the back roads through the farmland and bypass the tolls and the distance is shorter. Now these roads aren't as nice but you save money. The cities should fix the road if there was say a pot hole. The city knows there will be a lot of people using these roads and should keep them well maintained. This last part is what China and other Asian countries are missing

It was a half though up report in the 80s (if I remember correctly) that had very little to no data to back it up. Everything has a negative impact and when it comes to renewal energy its just glanced over and instead talked up like its a new super technology. Does solar or wind produce green house gasses? Not on their own but in the process of gathering the resources it sure does. Chopping forests and destroying ecosystems to put up solar fields sure isn't saving the planet. During the night or calm wind free days, how willwe have power? Batteries? Oh boy the destruction those cause. Old wind turbine blades? What do we do with them? They're just going into landfills. We're not going to eat just corn and soy so we'll need to plant more plants all over the country because oranges cant grow in the northern states and pumpkins don't grow in southern states. So we'll have to expand farmland out more to have a more diverse plant selection. But we'll still need to feed the animals. No point in making them go extinct

No one is. You will have to spread out farmland because again some crops only grow in certain climates. So now you're spreading the pollution from the fertilizer around the country. Corn and soy can travel down the Mississippi river but what about the fertilizer and pesticides for the strawberries and blueberries? What river or stream will they travel down? They will have to be increased if we are only eating plants so the pollution in the Pacific from Californias crops is going to increase because of the increase in crops being made

Comparing someone to a single calculated average is different than comparing someone to a group of people who made the average. Some guys aged 25 might be 6 2 or 5 8. Someone 5 10 would fit fine in that average even if the calculated average was 5 11 but someone like Andre the giant at 7 4 wouldn't.

The UK for example had mostly trench warfare tactics and equipment being made because they thought it would be the same trench warfare as WWI. Fossil fuels are much more energy dense which is why they are used more today than wind or solar. You need a lot of energy to create usable heat and it would take a long time to do it with just wind or solar

The way the vaccine works has had years of study, not virus itself. mRNA types have had developments for some time but this is the first use to the public for them (since they skipped over everything that is required by law and to help better understand the long-term affects). The coronavirus is new. It first appeared in 2019 and unless you're going to imply the Chinese made the virus then how are they able to design a vaccine for it 20 years earlier? That doesn't make sense. Honestly cant call it a vaccine either since those are supposed to prevent you from getting sick but anything out today doesn't do that as you can see.   286.  @genericjoe4082  the thing about solar is it reflects heat back into the atmosphere and having a bunch in the hottest climates or at least enough to make it worth it, would increase the temperature. Plus you have the problem of mining all the resources for them too and wind turbines cant be recycled. As for going overboard I'm not sure how much of solar panels/turbines you think we would need to make a dent in the power grid but its quite a lot. You can't just have a couple wind turbines or a single solar field and expect it to do much

  287.  @genericjoe4082  I checked and I guess they can be recycled but are very rarely recycled and end up in landfills. Theres a picture of a giant pile of them in a lot of articles half buried. As for how much power each generate, no lol. Wind turbines, if having a constant wind speed which isn't exactly ever going to happen but lets say it does, makes just over 20 kwh per day while the average US home uses 30 kwh per day. Solar panels make 1.5 kwh. Even if they hypothetically did produce enough to power a single home for a day, there are over 140 million houses in the US. If you wanted to make even just a small fraction of houses have power, you'll need a lot of wind turbines, which take up a huge amount of space and even more solar panels which takes up even more space. In case you didn't know, theres a certain distance turbines are put together. Its typically half a mile or more. There's space in between the blades on the ground so something like a farm can be made but for solar panels it takes up the whole area. Nothing can go there unless you build them on top of some platform blocking all the light below. I've seen a house or 2 with a solar panel on the roof but at 5% power production of the daily usage on a good day, it wont really do much. Talking about no sources and yet you didn't provide any either lol

"add solar panels between the turbines" not sure if you've ever seen a wind farm before but I have 2 about an hour from me. You know where they're located? On a farm. You can't just rip up some guys land and put up panels. Thats unethical. Sure not every wind farm is on farmer Joe's land but someone owns the land. Com Ed or whatever electric provider you have doesn't own millions of square miles land. Second if those numbers really are true then we would only need 150,000 and we have a little less than half of that already (70,000) yet wind only makes up 10% of the total power for the US. Now im no math genius but those numbers clearly dont scale at all. Even at half power they dont. I know the simple solution would be "just add more" but thats not how it works. Like I said theres a reason we don't fill the desert with solar panels and Ted Ed I believe even made the video. Theres a reason why we don't have thousands and thousands more wind turbines than what we already have

  293.  @scythal  maintaining a car isn't that expensive unless you go to the mechanic often. I've checked and at least personally for me its either the same or higher cost to take the public transportation system to my nearest city and that is just the train itself. Adding buses makes owning a car cheaper and this is with my old 99 Subaru with around 20mpg. More modern cars like a Hyundai Elantra get closer to 38 so I could drive to the city with 1.5 gallons of gas. Thats less than $6 at the current price of gas vs $6.75 for a 1 way ticket via train. I'd still need to go to the train station by bus and still need to take the bus from the station to my destination 4 times per trip. Yeah if you lived 3 blocks from your work in the city it probably would be cheaper but a lot of states like Illinois tax everyone for public transportation thats used in Chicago and thats not fair to us. I don't live in the Chicago and 9 million others also dont but we shouldn't have to prove to a city and get nothing in return. If people want to do that, set up donation boxes

Im not saying it was never tested on human volunteers ever, I'm saying it was created and approved in about a year (at least in the US) which means they have to have rushed it and not follow3d the process every other medication has to go through. If you have ever seen the US government in action, they are super slow to do anything. Theres so many bureaucratic hoops to jump through that getting it approved in a year means they have to have spent a significantly lower amount of time in one of the multiple steps to making it. 2 of my siblings have to take newly created medication and my sister was part of the trials that took over 4 years to do before it could be approved for my brother and everyone else who needed to take it. It takes years for any medication because you don't know how the person will react to it in a few years to it. Thats the issue here. If it turns out to be safe in 10 years, thats great. If people are worried about it and dont want to risk being part of a class action lawsuit in 20 years, then theres no reason to harass them. I personally dont want to end up on a commercial saying "if you or a loved one have taken X, you may be entitled to a significant compensation" just because someone on the internet doesn't follow the actual process

Removal of a statue of a guy from 400 years ago who was a great person for the country at the time doesn't do anything. In order to store the power you need to have a battery and theres tons of issues with that. You heard about Tesla mining cobalt with children to make batteries for cars? How do you think it will happen when you need more for a single house than a car? Theres also land that is an issue. Cant put them up in places where theres no sun or tons of snow. Its not just "install panels, free energy" that so many people think it is. If you really cared about the environment, you'd look into the negatives as well. World isn't a fairy tale

I have a pretty good job but I'm trying to pay off my student loans as fast as possible to avoid interest. Even if I had my own house now, $5k would be 25% of my entire savings account. I'd personally like to pay it up front because those loans or pay over time deals really screw people over with interest. Plus I live where it snows in the winter and storms hard in the summer.
