The interesting thing here, one of them, is that this seems to be what happens when a religion becomes dominant in a culture.  From the Saudis perspective they have to think that they are justified in anything that they do.  All the oil underneath their feet is not happenstance, but rather divine providence.  They have been deliberately given power by their creator.  They have a divine obligation to wipe out the shia.  This region, and everything that has happened there, really going back to the Shah in Iran, but starting in earnest with the Reagan White House, is the biggest clusterfuck in the history of the world.  _We_ caused this mess.  I can't think of any US involvement in my lifetime that hasn't ultimately made the whole situation worse.
