Huge question here, how is it that the Republicans can manufacture stories about John Kerry that are completely false and make it stick, but the Democrats are unable to make something like W's horrendous National Guard record have any negative effect? There's a pattern of this kind of thing, but Kerry and Bush in both these instances exemplify that pattern. You give the Democrats bullets and they can't shoot straight enough to do anything with them while the GOP is like Tony in a cave with a box of scraps. They can make a scandal that dominates the news cycles out of nothing. I have a personal opinion on the why. I think it's because we elect nice guys instead of political realists. I think we need to look for people who are meaner and more vindictive, as awful as that might sound to some people, but if it's not that. If it's not that we elect naive emotional children to office, what is it? Why can Democrats not play politics? Bill Clinton came probably the closest in my lifetime during his '92 campaign and the first couple of years he was in office, but he had Dick Morris, a Republican, advising him. Morris was very important to Clinton's success, and Bill had some operatives like James Carville and Stephanopolous. This is an anomaly though. We don't seem to want to engage in the business of politics. Our Democratic representatives act like it's beneath them to fight back. W's war record was jaw-droppingly bad, and Kerry was a war hero. How can we continually screw this up so bad?
