While I would also recommend learning the local language (I'm fluent in Spanish and spend most of my time between Barcelona and Latin America), here are three good ways to get by with only English: 1) Google translate app...have it at the ready, people are fine communicating with you via your gadgets 2) Uber...it's available in many countries around the world and you don't have to hail a cab or navigate local transport 3) Be shameless...if your communication skills in the local language are minimal, there are times when you'll have to pantomime, use props, and make silly sounds to get your point across. Be comfortable 'making a fool' of yourself and you'll suffer less anxiety in situations where there is a profound language barrier.
