Gross Tonnage refers to the enclosed volume of a ship and is mostly used for passenger ships and ferries. Displacement is used for cargo ships and warships. A ship's Gross Tonnage is usually a much higher number than its Displacement tonnage.

@augustosolari7721 In the past there were many ways of measuring a ship's tonnage and it is very confusing. But since the 1980s there have only been Gross Tonnage and Displacement. Displacement tonnage is what a ship would weigh if it was measured on giant scales, while Gross Tonnage measures the volume of a ships enclosed spaces worked out by a complex formula. So I don't know what the Titanic's Gross Tonnage was, but another famous ship, Queen Elizabeth 2 was 70,000 Gross tons and 50,000 displacement tonnage.
