The British lent a battleship to the Soviets. When they gave it back at the end of the war, the guns were rusted in place, the ship was overrun with rats and nothing worked. Not surprisingly it was scrapped as soon as it got back to Britain.

Remember that United States ships were "dry" during the war. No wonder they tried to make friends on ships of allied nations that quite sensibly had rations of rum, beer, etc for their crews morale.

There was a lot of confusion as to what happened when Sydney just disappeared (no radio calls were made), it took a month or two to work out what happened to it, so the news of its destruction was fairly recent.
