@GrahamStephan
As someone who used to trade equities hardcore and went through some pretty large amounts of espresso per day, bad side effects are really easy to counter.
If I needed a nap after market close, I'd take one. I could pop a couple ibuprofens to counter the brain's response every 3 - 4 weekends where I'd drink no coffee to reset the tolerance levels. With the way I used coffee back then, the brain would constrict blood vessels in anticipation for caffeine dilation it wasn't going to get. I kept my vitamins sufficient, because caffeine makes me leak those away. Etc.
Alcohol doesn't give any performance enhancement and can't be mitigated with such simple habits, methods and science, because it's just pure poison. Weed is similar, not a poison, but gives no advantage in life.
I started in a very disadvantaged position and so I've needed to make my mind as sharp as possible, because I don't have charisma, I don't have connections, I have paranoid personality disorder and, before the trading career took off, I was on welfare, hating my mediocrity. I just don't need any more disadvantages then the ones that were thrown at me the second I left the group home system.
But, I'm good now. Relaxed, semi-retired, own some RE and do some casual trading on the side. Life's been good after the initial steep slope. I still don't need any poisons, though.
