Think of the alternative - Lib Dems linked up with Labour to form a minority government, having to rely on the support of smaller parties to keep the Tories out. An impossible task, leading to a government which could fall at any week. Nick Clegg had no choice, a Tory/Lib Dem government was the only option.

@jasonkingshott2971 Did you become deputy Prime Minister Jason? Did you become leader of a British political party?

@lightbulbsun But how certain would have a minority government of either way would have been strong and lasted for at least 4 years? The only known time that has happened is in the Lib/Lab pact of Jim Callaghan formed in 1977 and it lasted 18 months. Callaghan did manage to soldier on until the spring, but he had the hell of the winter of discontent to deal with which killed his government.

@lightbulbsun I know he is now vilified, but I am sorry, I am still a part Blairite in my politics, with the rest topped up by Lib Dem politics. Blair, for all of his faults, managed to lead a strong government. Remember in 2005 when two years after the disaster of the Iraq war, he won a third term with still a decent majority of around 60. And now he is seen as a the evil minded one of politics. He is nothing compared to the shit we have had through Boris, and now the total incompetence of Truss.

@lightbulbsun Hey, I am left wing in my politics, it is more of the style and leadership that I liked Blair at. In terms of politics I am centre left.

@MS-19 David Cameron was forced into offering the EU referendum by Nigel Farage as he was scared of him on the lead up to the 2015 election. If he had have taken advice from George Osborne, he would never have offered it.

@thequestioner5916 You really have no idea of the DUP do you? You are either mad or stupid to think the DUP would ever support a Labour government. Do you know who they are? A right wing party from Northern Ireland.

@thequestioner5916 Here is the reality of the 2010 results. Labour could win the support of the Lib Dems and the SDLP (Northern Irish party). Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, Green Party and Plaid Cymru all together had just 5 seats. This means this coalition of multiples would have 323. Three short of an overall majority. Also you don't seem to understand, that governments in the UK need a strong majority for them to work properly. Even with Sinn Fein not taking their seats, this would give this type of coalition a wafer thin majority and it would mean the government could collapse at any internal argument. So no, a Labour led coalition was never going to happen.
