The Skysabre really wont help with air defense for near-peer adversaries. It has a 25km+ range, so it's rather limited as it can't even target ballistic missiles. Most aircraft would be able to shoot long range cruise missiles from out of range and even if the missile is shot down, the carrier can keep returning until the SAM fails. The UK needs Aegis and the Sm-3/6 for hypersonic missiles/ICBMs or aircraft at longer ranges. No tests or studying needed as it's already a proven system. This would have seriously helped the type 45s which lack BM defense.

@glennridsdale577 I'm sorry you have poor English and can't have a conversation without insulting someone. Someone might want to get their Medulla Oblongata checked. "Either your English is very poor or your grasp of the difficulty of ballistic missile targets is." Like you failed to grasp my entire comment and just had a knee jerk reaction. Why leave out that I stated " Most aircraft would be able to shoot long range cruise missiles from out of range and even if the missile is shot down, the carrier can keep returning until the SAM fails." I guess 25km is a great range, you got me. "Type 45s are getting Aster 30 Block 1NT for ABM and possibly Block 2 in due course." Ah so a modified anti-air missile is going to do the trick, got you. end sarcasm Now it's one thing to have a conversation and/or debate but please move on and troll someone else, I don't deal with blatant trolls I block them. Thank you.

@quincg1288 It could, but at a 25km range, to detect, track, calculate, and fire all give it minimal time. That's taking into account missiles flying above the radar horizon it can easily see. You then have missiles below the radar horizon, which give it much less time to detect, track, and fire in a under 25km.

It is. It's range is only 25km, it's not a large missile. This is also what helps it's speed as it's less mass. Pros and cons.

@jureeratpholseela7508 Agreed SAMP/T would have been a much better home-brew choice. Still not the biggest fan of the aster for BM defense, but it would be a much more capable system. Im guessing cost played the main factor here.

@jureeratpholseela7508 My overall issue is the missile itself as like the Patriot or S400 it was designed for aircraft, so the missile is generally more agile but not as fast or can climb as high in altitude and to take down BMs in a last ditch effort. I understand they are modifying the Aster, but at the end of the day it's still an anti-air missile that was converted to be BM defense. I wish the UK went ground up on building a BM interceptor but that would cost more for the R and D or have gone the AEGIS route like many NATO nations for interoperability between nations. But that's just my opinion, I know others will have theirs.

@jureeratpholseela7508 I can only hope it's a complete redesign and not just better motors in the same shell. I don't see the EU helping fund it, hence why the UK didn't help build the newer block Asters and split ways on radars. Never say never though haha. I think it was Italy, France, and the Netherlands who also modified their Sampson or S1850M radars to (smart-l, and I forget the other ones name) as well. So the UK would need to modify their Sampson radars to their standard since their radars are meant more for medium range over whelming air attacks(not saying it can't track BMs), and that's why it can target so many targets at once, but it lacks the range of the modified versions like they lack the ability to target as many targets. Pros and cons.

The US the ground based midcourse defense, SM3, and Sm6

It's really not, it's range is terrible and is more or less a last resort point defense.

@quincg1288 I agree it's like the US NASAMs which is good to protect high value targets, I just wish it's range was better.

@LWQ15881 "Joined Jan 31, 2021" It's sad I always seem to get these 10 year old trolls who can't have a conversation without trying to insult you. What can you expect with low IQ trolls. Lucky for the block button. I guess it really is hard for them to look up the range.

Looks much heavier then the 14kg/30 pounds, that must be for the missile only excluding the launcher or this soldier is making it look much heavier then it should be lol.
