Uzbekistan is another example of this phenomenon: TFR 2012: 2.34 TFR 2020: 3.06 TFR 2021: 3.27 TFR 2022: 3.40 TFR 2023: 3.50 Economically, it is not as rich as Kazakhstan but not as poor either. The poorest country in Central Asia, Tajikistan, has a stagnant fertility trend. All these Central Asian countries are bucking the global trend. I wonder why?

@baha3alshamari152 If you count it as part of Central Asia, then of course. Btw, the 4.3 figure is speculative; we simply don't have proper data for birth rates in Afghanistan at this moment. According to the last nationwide survey conducted by the DHS program in 2015, Afghanistan's fertility rate was 5.3 (2014-2015). According to the Population Reference Bureau, the fertility rate in 2023 is 5.4, which indicates an increase from 2015. Proper adjustments for all years can only be made when there's sufficient evidence.

@Raymzhan What makes you think that? There are more Tajiks (about 11 million) in Afghanistan than in Tajikistan (9 million), and more Pamiris (about 500,000) in the Afghan Badakhshan province than in the Tajik Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (about 250,000). Additionally, Afghanistan is home to over 3 million Uzbeks, about a million Turkmen, and 6-7 million Hazaras and Aimaks (who have a genetic affinity to medieval Turko-Mongol khanates, and Kipchak Turks). Basically, every major Central Asian ethnicity that you can think of, be it Iranian or Turkic, exists in Afghanistan in some form. Why wouldn't it be considered part of Central Asia?

@thomasgrabkowski8283 But Uzbekistan never had a huge Russian population, unlike Kazakhstan. The ethnic Russian population in Uzbekistan peaked at around 13% of the total population in 1959, with the total number of Russians reaching its highest point in the 1980s. Since then, it has declined rapidly. In 2012, when Uzbekistan's fertility rate reached its lowest point in history, Russians made up only about 3% of the total population. Today, they constitute just 2% of the population.

@CeoLogJM You're assuming that secularism is some kind of universal truth when it isn't. It's just a worldview. Just because it has been a popular worldview among the elites since the French Revolution doesn't mean it's universal. The general public is usually drawn towards the worldview of the elites, which explains much of the secularisation trend in the modern world. We Muslims call it "Taghút" (worshipping other than God).

@chisaki703 "They don't share our culture" Neither does Tajikistan. It's an ethnically Iranian-majority country, unlike all other Central Asian countries that are predominantly Turkic. Why is it still considered part of Central Asia then? Nobody argued that Pakistan is part of Central Asia, cuz it's not. But Afghanistan is a debatable case.

@couldntbeproved1392 "Middle East" is a colonial term used by the ancient Greeks and it has no geographical basis today. Even Egypt is considered a part of the Middle East but it's in North Africa. How exactly is Afghanistan culturally and historically Middle Eastern? You said that the ethnic distribution of Afghanistan doesn't matter if it's culturally Middle Eastern. However, the ethnogenesis of a region is what determines its culture. There are only around 300,000 to 400,000 families of Arab descent in Afghanistan today. Yes, I wouldn't call cities in Germany Middle Eastern but how is that relevant to the topic of geographical attestation of Afghanistan based on whatever subjective criteria that we would like to project?

Geographical attestation of a country is based on the objective geographical criterion, not subjective whims, mental images, or cultural stereotypes. Your criterion is so subjective that someone with different preconceived notions about Central Asia would beg to differ. Like when I imagine the land of Central Asia, I see images of famous Hadith compilers like Bukhari, Silk Road, and Eurasian steppes. Tajikistan is different from the rest of the Central Asian countries because it's populated by Iranians. Are indigenous Iranian populations living in Central Asia not Central Asian just because they don't "fit into the stereotype"? What kind of criteria is that?

Saudi Arabia does not have a sub-replacement fertility rate. The ethnic Saudis still have on average 3 children per woman, while the immigrants have only 1. I think the same pattern applies to other Gulf Arab countries.

Wdym by "Whi-te Kazakhs"? Most residents of Kazakhstan are phenotypically Whi-te, regardless of ethnicity. If you meant "Caucasians in Kazakhstan" then they are long gone... The Sarmatians are gone, the Irano-Scythians are gone, it's a Turkic land now. The Slavs were just temporary Indo-European Caucasian settlers in Kazakhstan who couldn't keep up with the birth rates of Kazakh Turks so they will be gone too.
