Since both sides have nuclear weapons, at least their military commands knew they didn’t want to escalate the tension and make it into a shooting war. So, both sides took away their soldiers’ guns to keep them from shooting each other. They thought that the simmering tension in their soldiers would go away. Soldiers on both sides decided to improvise and use whatever weapons they could make to fight each other.
