Russian driver died at the wheel after putting it in reverse. Amazing that the diesel engine is still working. A petrol engine would have stop working when the fire burned the ignition wires.

A military diesel truck has a manual transmission with high range and low range gears, once the glow plug ignites the diesel compression cycle and starts the engine you need to depress the clutch and put it in reverse. The driver would have to been very lucky once the truck was moving to jump out as soon as it was hit.

@blitzroehre1807 It's a diesel engine. You need to heat the glow plug in the cylinder head before the mechanical fuel pump and the starter cranks it over for the diesel compression to self ignite. If it was parked in reverse in gear, even a petrol engine starter couldn't override the reverse gear that is engaged.

@blitzroehre1807 A starter can only crank over the engine in neutral with the transmission not engaged. You should try cranking over your petrol engine with the gear in reverse and see if it even moves. A diesel engine has a higher compression ratio for the diesel cycle to self ignite and will not move if it is in gear. The high compression resistance, the low gear in reverse, and weight of the truck would overpower an electric starter.

@blitzroehre1807 A diesel starter is not rated for continuous operation and can be used start the diesel self ignition cycle if the glow plugs are inoperable, but it reduces the life of diesel starter having to crank the flywheel about 200 rpms to start the diesel self ignition. Any engine starter is not rated for continuous operation and has to stop running to cool down; people have destroyed their petrol engine starters by continuously cranking it without a cool down period in a few minutes of running in neutral.

@blitzroehre1807 Ural-4320 (Russian Урал-4320, the current spelling of the manufacturer is URAL-4320) is an all-wheel-drive the Russian use as their general purpose military truck as well as the armies in the old Warsaw Pact. The Ural-4320 has a KanAZ-740.10 engine, curb weight 8.34 t. Motor starter 7.73 kW with magnetic switch, remote-controlled via ignition lock. Voltage control of electronic semiconductor controllers, contactless, batteries 12 V, 190 Ah, two pieces.
