A self-propelled howitzer is a “Shoot and Scoot” weapon. The Russians were asking for it placing them in an open field dug into a hole. The towed M777 howitzer has a longer range and better accuracy. It was only a matter of time before the drone saw them in the hole in ground in the open field.

@johnboddie6826 In less than 6 months, the Russian military has lost at least a dozen generals, an untold amount of senior field grade officers (majors and above) and countless junior officers. The Russian military organization relies heavily on the officer corps and less on the NCOs, since Russia micromanages their military from Putin on down the line to generals being required to be on the front lines giving orders on the front line because of the mistrust in the ranks; a holdover from the Soviet era of placing political commissar officers with the troops to make sure that their dictators orders were carried out. America intelligence estimated that the Russians have 75,000 killed and wounded out of an estimated 150,000 at the start of the invasion. The Ukrainian military is doing it surprisingly well with less troops using Western style military training they got after the 2014 invasion of Crimea.

@dk418 Preparing an earthen position is to protect against shrapnel damage to the SPH hull in a counter battery duel. With the deep hole in the ground and high earthen mounds on either side protecting the SPH hull sides; it doesn’t protect against a direct hit. You can have multiple pre-set firing position for the SPH to “Shoot and Scoot”, but taking the time and effort to dig holes against near misses is counter productive against the M777 howitzers range and accuracy. Star Wars Boba Fett; “You can run, but you’ll only die tired.” “The Russian SPH can dig a hole and hide, but it’ll only die tired.”
