Stuff and nonsense. Conservatives trying to ignore America’s pre-eminence as a multicultural, economic and military superpower. These ‘definitions’ of multiculturalism as alienating, are hand tailored for conservative anti-immigrant positions and ignore the amazing success of assimilation that also respects various cultures. America’s ‘civil war’ of the moment, and what conservatives would like to ignore, is that the white majority in the US is becoming a minority, which is so frightening to this crowd that they’re willing to sacrifice democracy ie the pillar of Western civilization, to elect a populist cretin in the vain hope of turning back the clock.

@immanuelcan3310 It looks an awful lot like you're trying to give a pass to Christianity. 9/11 was an attack by foreign Jihadists, Jan 6 was an attack by domestic citizens, some of whom were certainly Christian. I could easily argue that Jan 6 was more dangerous to our democracy.

Fundamentalist believers are intolerant the world over.

America is the superpower and we’re multicultural. The most dangerous attack on Western Civ is coming from the right’s denunciation of democracy, which is Western Civ highest achievement.

Not in America

What Weinstein is arguing against is intolerance and the chief purveyor of that ideology is the right with no better example than the GOP presidential candidate. Democracy folks.

@immanuelcan3310 America is the leading economic, military and cultural superpower. Because of multiculturalism.

@immanuelcan3310 I agree that there is a limit to our ability to absorb immigrants. Immigration is now twice what it was in the '70s. But your contention that America was made by white Europeans is historically inaccurate and a common, bigoted refrain from the right. The Chinese built our railroads, black Americans created our entire musical culture. They did this despite racism and violence perpetrated by these Europeans with 'similar values." The danger to American culture and citizens at the moment does indeed come from people with different values; polls show that millions of conservative Americans support violence to further their political aims. That's anti-democracy, and patently un-American.

@immanuelcan3310 I notice you mention 9/11, but not Jan 6th. I count an attack on the capitol, and the denial of honest election outcomes as, in your words ‘radicallly oppositional things’. 9/11 was perpetrated by foreign Jihadists, while Jan 6 was homegrown Christian/conservatives. I agree that there should be limits on immigration, but I completely disagree that immigrants from Mexico, the Middle East or Asia represent a dire danger to our democracy. The danger is coming from the fear of a coming white minority. Nothing else explains why millions of people would vote for an incompetent, morally deficient, treasonous candidate like Trump.

@immanuelcan3310 9/11 was perpetrated by foreign jihadists whereas Jan 6th, election denial, planned kidnapping of Governor Whitmer were perpetrated by white Americans. So those 'radically oppositional things' you refer to, meaning core American values like democracy are really being undermined not by multiculturalism, but by white fear of becoming a minority. That alone explains how millions of Americans could choose an incompetent, indicted, morally bankrupt candidate as the GOP's standard bearer. I believe we have diametrically opposed views on this subject.

@immanuelcan3310 9/11 was perpetrated by foreign Jihadists, Jan 6, the threat to kidnap Gov Whitmer and election denial was perpetrated by conservative white Christians. These 'radical opposiontal things' are not the dangers of Islamic terrorism in the US, but the dangers brought about by white America becoming a minority and therefore allowing democracy to be trampled.
1
@immanuelcan3310 9.11 perpetrated by foreign jihadists, Jan 6 perpetrated by home grown Christians. I’d argue that an enemy within is far more dangerous.
1
@immanuelcan3310 9/11 was foreign terrorists, Jan 6 was domestic Christians who now pose a greater threat to democracy than American Muslims.
1
@immanuelcan3310 9/11 was a poor choice of examples. Those were foreign terrorists, while Jan 6 was perpetrated by domestic Christians and a bigger threat to our democracy. Your logic is flawed.
