  1. 'Rimless' cartridges are about as old as the Russian cartridge, and do have advantages over rimmed rounds. For 'Western' countries, those advantages were worth the investment--note the British pretty much ditched the .303 (a rimmed cartridge) right after WWII. For the Russians, the 7.62x54R is still good enough GPMG and precision rifle use.
