Frog face does highlight one important issue though. Without safe legal routes to apply for asylum in the UK from abroad, people will still feel motivated to attempt dangerous crossings. Labour need to arrange this if they are serious about stopping the boats. Just processing claims and deporting people who are caught won't do it.

@blepala are they? criminals perhaps, but probably not terrorists. My understanding is that in most cases the people traffickers don't even get on the boat. Of those who are intercepted in boats some will say: I am an asylum seeker from xxxxx - please help me. Those people will make a claim to be processed. If their claim is unsuccessful they can be deported, as we know where to deport them to, although most are legit and successful anyway. The main problem is with the remainder who say: fair cop - I am not an asylum seeker, but I am not going to tell you where I originally came from, so you can't even deport me - because you don't know where to deport me to! So I think just intercepting boats on its own will make little difference. It might even encourage crossings as it makes them safer! If it was easier to make an asylum application for the UK from France or elsewhere outside the UK then these claimants could wait in that country while we assessed their claim. If that claim is found to be genuine we could either then admit them safely or have agreements with other safe countries nearby (that aren't Rwanda) to help them. That way the people making the dangerous crossings will mostly be the dodge pots and not the traumatized genuine asylum seekers. That would make boat crossings easier to deal with as a mostly criminal issue, whereas at the moment it is also a humanitarian issue.

@jamesmiller113 well, if someone hadn't convinced people (who now mostly regret it) to leave the EU, it would be easier to make agreements to spread the load. Well done everybody - well done.

@bwilliams572 Many never have documents to begin with, have to leave unexpectedly without them or loose them along the way. So they can't just jump on a plane. I used to work with some one who was an ex claims assessor. She said that claimants were thoroughly grilled to verify where they are from and who they are. They have to identify which town / village they are from, not just which country and also accurately describe that villages layout and appearance etc. they also have to submit medical records to prove evidence of torture etc. It's no picnic. That's why lawyers are involved. My sister knows someone whose claim of religious persecution failed because the medical evidence she submitted of the scars she received from beatings was 'lost'. I suspect more genuine claims fail than bogus ones succeed.
