Narendra Modi's campaign in 2014 was not on the plank of majoritarianism. In fact he said that the fight is against corruption and poverty by the Hindus and theMuslims together. But then they dropped these slogans and exposed their majoritarian agenda unabashedly. That is why I use the phrase ' Trojan Horse.' -Dr Parakala Prabhakar

“BJP knows very well that their followers are not bothered about the economic crisis, they are bothered about the Ram temple construction in Ayodhya, they are bothered about whether the Kerala Story is screened, whether Kashi Vishwanath corridor is renovated or not, whether the senkol is installed in the Parliament or not. They are made to believe that these are the significant things in India. This is the danger. If we confine ourselves to the electoral battles then the victories will be ephemeral and temporal.” -Dr Parakala Prabhakar

“The faith that people had in institutions is eroding and Election Commissioners being appointed the way it has come now would erode the faith further. Democracy exists on institutions. And if those institutions erode, then the democratic values will erode. Hence it is important to ensure that these institutions are independent, are working in the manner they should. But if we have, so to say, our own people sitting there, then there will be trouble for institutions and ultimately trouble for democracy.” -Anil Swarup, Former bureaucrat and author of “Encounters with Politicians”.

“India exemplifies the global democratic recession. India’s recent downgrade to a hybrid regime is a major influence on the world’s autocratization. And the modality of India’s democratic decline reveals how democracies die today: not through a dramatic coup or midnight arrests of opposition leaders, but instead, it moves through the fully legal harassment of the opposition, intimidation of media, and centralization of executive power. By equating government criticism with disloyalty to the nation, the government of Narendra Modi is diminishing the very idea that opposition is legitimate. India today is no longer the world’s largest democracy.” -Journal of Democracy, July 2023
