  1. He over estimated his swimming abilities, swam too far, got a cramp, panicked instead of going into a floating position, and drowned.

  2. You can do a face down float called a dead man float as well. In my opinion, it's a little easier than a back float...it's pretty much the position you end up in if you were to actually drown, but you will have to raise your head every so often to breath.
