@LorraElizabeth Believe it or not, the life goals of some people don't include being filthy rich. If you want to become filthy rich, nobody is stopping you from achieving that goal through starting a business or investing in one. Is it difficult? Yes. Does it require risk? Do you have to make sacrifices? Yes. Will you fail the first time? Most likely. Is it possible to do? Yes. Example, Michael Dell started Dell Computer in his dorm room with $1000.
If you don't like capitalism, what economic system would you prefer? The problems with capitalism aren't with the system itself, but with laws that tilt the playing field. Grants, bailouts, tax incentives, regulations, cronyism, etc are all vulnerable to hijacking by unscrupulous actors for self benefit. Even with these flaws, capitalism is still the most effective economic model for prosperity and improving quality of life.

@okkj2075 I agree 100%, you don't really need a degree to learn anything. Any person with sufficient intelligence, perseverance, self discipline, and a strong work ethic can self teach any subject he/she has the desire to grasp. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci, a beyond brilliant polymath with no formal education beyond basic reading, writing, and arithmetic; and Nikola Tesla, a college dropout likely responsible for the most significant positive impact to quality of life for all of humanity.
However, degrees are required if you wish to work professionally in some fields, such as law, medicine, civil engineering, etc. While I can understand the necessity of requiring proof of education in medicine and in some engineering fields, I never understood why most states require a law degree to sit for the bar exam. My nephew could probably pass the state bar, but he hasn't a law degree.
