  1. Actually, it was the American M10 and M36 tank destroyers that had the open top. The design doctrine favored light weight, maneuverability and crew visibility over armor; they were very effective weapons, even if the open turrets made the crew vulnerable. Edit: Actually, the Germans did make an open-topped tank destroyer earlier in the war, but the Elefant wasn't open-topped.
