  1. I was in the US military, stationed overseas for most of my time. I learned real quick to go away from bases, get out in the country and immerse myself in their culture. That can be highly dangerous in some places, so you need to be smart about it. You're not going to be picking anyone up in Baghdad or any place like it. Germany was fun 35 years ago, Korea was ok 22 years ago. I never made it to PI or Japan. Regardless, even in the US I had to get away from the base to meet someone. There are certain people who do not reflect the US military in a good light. For instance, Army was not allowed in the pub district in Frankfurt Germany, but USAF was. The Army guys would start fights, bust the place up, and get projectile vomiting drunk, it was so bad they would ask to see our military ID, and the Army guys could not get in. The only Marines in the area were embassy guards, and they do not act that way in public, if at all. Now you have the same thing going on with the civilians, they congregate around certain areas and some do not act right and that shows everyone who looks like them in a bad light. Guilt by association. A funny thing happened to me in Seoul, we were at the COEX mall, where I saw something I never saw anywhere else in the world. A mass of humanity flowing though the building, with a couple inches between them, thousands of people in a tiny space that made New York look sparsely populated and Chicago uninhabited. My friend and I were walking around, I had no money because of the ex wife, and four young ladies spotted us, came over and wanted to get pictures taken with us. They had never met Americans before, wanted to practice some English, and they looked at us like we were Brad Pit in his fightclub years. We talked a bit and they melded back into the endless stream of humanity walking through the mall. Nothing like that ever happened in any other country, Dubai was the closest in 1991, but it was only men who spoke to me while I was there. They always asked the same thing, was I from NYC or LA? I told them I was from a place half way between those two cities, they had no concept that driving across the US would not take several days rather than two hours like driving across UAE. I tried to explain to them its like driving to Belgrade or maybe Moscow from Dubai. Outside the base in Korea were a bunch of clubs and bars, most of which had juicy's working there, scantily clad ladies who would ask you to buy them a juice, and they'd sit and talk to you while they drank it. You had a choice between a $9 juice or a $12 one. This was not the place to find a wife, but to find a willing Russian or Filipina that was down for spicy time, that was the place. Osan AB was the only time I was ever asked out by attractive women, I told them I had no money, and they said they didn't care. Half an hour later it was spicy, they just seemed to like blue eyed German Americans. Germany was an amazing place to be in 1989-91, I got there when I was 19 and nowhere in the world has ever compared to that. Korea was like Disneyland while Frankfurt was like Las Vegas, but far less expensive and infinitely more fun then Vegas.
