Men make friends differently than when we are boys. Your friends will come from your interests and activities. The vast majority of my friends came from me building and racing cars. A few are from the military, and a handful are from long distance hole punches or RC flying. The friends I have are mostly gearheads and drag racers. If your thing is video games, all your friends will be online. You need something in the real world. Something tangible.
I have ONE friend I can always depend on, and we have been friends since 1985, we met when I was 16. I got to be friends with his dad, who was one of my science teachers, I was the only student of his to attend the funeral. They are big into 59 Chevys. That friend lives 1000 miles away, but I can reach him any time.
My life has been rough to say the least. I live alone in the woods where I build my cars. That is by choice. I am in a completely different direction from most of the gearheads around here, so they don't come out here, but we get together and work on stuff at their shops, and talk at shows/races.
Be careful doing for others, you want friends that give back, that are reciprocal and it doesn't matter to either of you who has done more. You're always there, always dependable. If you do too much for others, they will come to expect it and will not reciprocate, you won't be friends long and they wont respect you.
If you want friends, you have to put yourself out there, get people to talk about themselves, and they will like you more. Having something in common will make the people you meet more interesting.
Just so ya know, drag racers are pretty cool, rarely judge anyone, and they will help you out even when you're racing against them. I've helped lots of guys go faster, sometimes even faster than my cars are. You could do worse for a friend group, and you don't need a fast car to be included. You can bracket race anything, even mom's minivan.
