The RAF's Bomber Command in the first year and a bit of the night bombing campaign were lucky if their bombs landed within 5 miles of the intended target.

Sorry, but navigating using a map at night is virtually impossible. The shape of any urban area does not correspond to the shape that the street lights and building lights would make up. The only time where it would be possible is where a water feature cuts into or through a city. Even in day time it is difficult to navigate by recognising urban areas other than by using well-known landmarks, such as the Pyramid swimming pool in Bedford.

@sam8742 before we had electronic navigation aids we used light beacons. By the end of the 1920s radio beacons were coming into service. A certain American General famous for slapping his Privates got into trouble after flying along such a route after he ignored the rules.
