Basically, its not possible to recreate the Bitcoin protocol using regular databases. Many other applications could easily be replaced with a regular database though, you're right about that.

@TheStrategistYT right its not exact. however, Youtube's original dislike count was also not exact.
2
@TheStrategistYT oh ok nice. that one uses its own method. it has its own database and factors in view counts, comment counts, and previous like/dislike ratios to estimate the total number of dislikes
2
@TheStrategistYT you mean removed dislikes from the API? as far as i know they already have. if you're seeing people report the dislike counts, its because there are extensions that count dislikes on their own, so they are not using Youtube's API but their own. I'm currently using an extension that does this called "Return Youtube Dislikes"
2
when Youtube removes dislikes from the API, which they originally said they'll do in December, the extensions will stop working too
2
@emonymph6911 well they can blame someone else if they want but unless they change themselves they will inevitably get scammed again. animals get eaten, dummies get tricked, critical thinking people survive. deal with it.
1
hacker news (also called Y Combinator News) if you don't already know it.
1
that will always be the case, but we shouldn't let bad creators stop us from rewarding good creators, and thats the benefit of decentralized systems. Youtube can demonetize good journalists so that we are only recommended the clickbait. A decentralized network wouldn't be able to do that.
1
its ok if the clickbait gets attention so long as they can't prevent the good journalists from getting rewarded for their well-earned attention. that is where the decentralized network comes in.

1
you can keep using the centralized networks, of course. the advantage of the decentralized internet would be that Facebook and Google can't decide which journalists get demonetized or deleted. So everyone is treated equally according to the protocol. If that's not important to you, that's OK you can keep using what you do already.
1
@emonymph6911 people who want to get reliable information care about the journalists, obviously thats not you though. I have no idea what the rest of your comment is trying to say. Things aren't free even for programmers. if there are a lot of scams that means the average person is uneducated, and that they should probably read more and find a good journalist to educate them.
1
@emonymph6911 read a peer reviewed journal? ok, that sounds fine to me. i still don't see what is driving you so nuts
1
@emonymph6911 i think you've just seen too much trash disguised as journalism and now you're imagining thats what journalism actually is.
1
@emonymph6911 some professors are also journalists, most aren't. are you ok?
1
@emonymph6911 did you get scammed and thats why you're so angry right now? most people aren't at fault for being scammed, but occasionally some are. it all depends whether or not they had the opportunity to educate themselves.
1
@emonymph6911 when did i personally attack you?
1
@emonymph6911 and i haven't been scammed yet so yea i kinda do think i'm smarter than the people who get scammed lol at least in some spaces, no offense to them.
1
@emonymph6911 why are you assuming most people will experience fraud? what mechanism are you imagining enables this fraud that doesn't already exist?
1
@emonymph6911 Ok, so i didn't personally attack you then... my questions are not rhetorical, I'm still hoping to get an answer.
1
@emonymph6911 "Give an example where someone is at fault for being scammed?" an example would be if someone says "give me money and I'll give you back twice that amount" such a financial model is obviously unsustainable so anyone who is thinking critically should recognize it as a scam. if someone falls for that then they are so braindead that I can't empathize with them, they chose not to ask any questions and they will suffer the consequences of that choice.
1
speak what about it? you just want him to say its growing?
1
@emonymph6911 Other way around: if the scammed person is dumb enough people won't feel sorry for them. The more "sophisticated" something presents itself as, the more likely it is to be a scam. It's dumb to get involved in things we don't understand, so good investments will make their terms and rules clear and simple rather than sophisticated. If I fall for a scam, thats on me. When I was young I had my password stolen, I blamed myself for that mistake and haven't had a problem since.

1
its ok if the bad content gets attention so long as nobody can prevent the good journalists from getting rewarded. that is where the decentralized network comes in. not everything will be good, but the baddies won't be able to get the good stuff taken down like they do right now.
1
once CNN and MSNBC are gone, Fox will be the next to drop because their platform relies on having enemies.
1
@LTUGang i watch all 3 (CNN, MSNBC, Fox) and I promise you they all do that. They all constantly talk about race, left-vs-right hot topics, never criticizing their own "team", always using the other team as an excuse, every single day. They're all classified under Entertainment and they all use that as a defense when they get sued for misrepresentation. Its just that the "left" side is extra down right now largely due to vaccine issues. Their numbers will even back out eventually though, they always do. They depend on each other like 2 legs of the same demon.
1

1
we already have that clickbait problem, the difference is that the good journalists would be given a reliable method of income. so it would be a net positive even if its not perfectly positive.
1
its ok if the clickbait gets attention so long as nobody can prevent the good journalists from getting rewarded. that is where the decentralized network comes in. on youtube not only does the clickbait reign supreme, youtube actively deletes or demonetizes the truthful channels. that cant happen on a decentralized network.
1
they already exist, and nobody is forced to use them of course. they're just an alternative to Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
1
while that is true, there is little financial incentive for a journalist to use them at the moment. if a financial incentive were built into the network's protocol it would attract a lot more publishers and viewers. of course, all of these networks can exist together in harmony.

than isomorphic javascript? not a chance!

its ok if capitalism or "big media" are present so long as they don't have external leverage over "small media." In our current situation, big networks can pressure Youtube to remove their competition, remove dislikes, send lobbyists to change the laws, etc. In a decentralized system they no longer have that option no matter how much money they have.
1
the point is that nobody should be able to demonetize or take down the good journalism, thats the benefit of the decentralized network.
1
what data are you thinking you'll have to give these random people? dunno if you've ever used cryptocurrencies but all you should need is one number that acts as an address for people to send funds to, and a password that you keep entirely to yourself. no name, email, address, credit card, or anything like that is required.
1
You can create a democratically regulated internet within a decentralized internet, but you cannot create that democratically regulated internet within a centralized internet. Centrality is the opposite of democratic. You don't have to use the whole decentralized internet, you can stay within the part of it that follows the rules you prefer.
1
the point is that good journalists can still be rewarded. of course bad ones can too, but as long as they can't take down the good ones, its a net positive for consumers.
1
its ok if clickbait gets attention so long as nobody can prevent the good journalists from getting rewarded. that is where the decentralized network comes in. currently we get clickbait while good journalists get deleted and demonetized, so we're getting the worst of both worlds. decentralized networks fix 1 of those 2 big problems.
